Avanti! palaa kiitetyllä RIITTI-ohjelmallaan tunnelmalliseen Porvoon Tuomiokirkkoon. Kirkon tilaa ja akustiikkaa hyödyntävässä konsertissa Avanti! yhdistää uutta ja vanhaa musiikkia. Ilta huipentuu Jukka Tiensuun Juho Laitiselle säveltämään sähkösellokonserttoon ”Tarinaoopperabaletti”.

Tunnetuista barokkiajan säveltäjistä kuullaan mm. Henry Purcellin hautajaismarssi ”The Queen’s Funeral March” sekä säveltäjän elämäkertaelokuvasta ”Kaikki elämäni aamut” tuttu MarinMarais’n ”Sonnerie de Ste-Geneviève du Mont de Paris”.

Avantin Riitti-konsertti hyödyntää nimensä mukaisesti rituaalia niin teosten kuin muotonsa osalta. Barokin juhlavuudesta 1900-luvun futuristisiin tunnelmiin ulottuva konsertti sisältää barokkimusiikin hittejä sekä harvemmin kuultuja 1950-luvun nauhakappaleita. Konsertin päättää viime kevään kantaesitetty Jukka Tiensuun sähkösellokonsertto.

The Sound of Welfare at the Cable Factory on Tue 20.9.2016

Avanti!’s concert The sound of Welfare continues the orchestra’s series of concerts with a political theme. This performance tackles the relation between art and the welfare state seriously, but with humor.

Jaakko Kuusisto conducts the concert with guest soloist e.g. Johanna Rusanen, Petri Bäckström and Jaakko Kortekangas.

The welfare state has taken ill as the commonplace goes. Can art provide the remedy? Simultaneously with cuts being introduced, arts are being hailed as a form of therapy and funded with this end in mind. But should welfare music be cheery and simple? Can it be played in minor or does this fail to produce the greatest happiness to the greatest number? Could it be that a sign of true social welfare is art that is autonomous and free from all predetermined purposes?

Musica Nova: In the spirit of Ligeti 12.2.2017

Musica Nova -festivaalin päätöskonsertissa György Ligetin vaikutus soi tämän tärkeimpien oppilaiden sekä pojan sävellyksissä. Avantia johtaa brittiläinen kapellimestari Clement Power.

Lukas Ligetin teoksessa ”Curtain” kohtaavat eurooppalaisen modernismin perintö ja afrikkalaiset rytmit. Kuvataiteista inspiroitunut teos tutkii melodisen ja harmonisen perustan päällä tapahtuvaa materiaalin “päälle maalaamista” ja pois pyyhkimistä animaatiotaiteilija William Kentdrigeen vertautuvalla tavalla. Pohjakankaana toimii jousikvartetti, jonka päälle Ligeti maalaa muodostaen jännitteen kvartetin ja laajemman ensemblen sointien välille.

Unsuk Chinin ”cosmigimmicksin” viimeinen osa, Thall, on kunnianosoitus György Ligetille. Osan nimi tarkoittaa koreaksi naamiota. Musiikillisena pantomiimina hahmottuvan osan keskiössä on kitara, joka soittaa muutamasta toistuvasta mikrosävelestä koostuvaa näennäismelodiaa. ”Melodia” muuntuu muiden instrumenttien harmonioiden mukaan kuin miimikon kasvojen ilme.

Myös Ligetin toisen tärkeän oppilaan, Benedict Masonin teos kumartaa oppi-isänsä suuntaan. ”Hinterstoissener traverse” -teoksessa käytetään vain yhtä säveltä, g:tä. Äärimmäisen minimalistinen lähestymistapa mahdollistaa rytmin ja dynamiikan tarkan tutkimisen.

Konsertti on osa Musica Nova Helsinki -festivaalin ohjelmistoa. Festivaali on Suomen suurin nykymusiikkitapahtuma, jonka taiteellisena johtajana on vuonna 2017 kapellimestari André de Ridder.

Avanti’s fall season 2016 concerts published

Avanti! will perform with three versatile programs during the fall season. The concerts vary from a thematic orchestra concert at the Cable Factory to an early music club gig with periodic instruments all the way to contemporary new music concert at the Helsinki Music Centre.

Klang 2016 sees Avanti premiere pieces by the composition students of the Sibelius Academy.
The programme consists of three pairs of compositions, each penned by two aspiring writers. While facing the challenge of overall coherence and ensuring that their piece is in unison with that of their pair’s, the composers have also a unique chance to explore the range of instrumentation possibilities that the large ensemble opens up. For seamless, vignette-like transitions, they will have to enter into a dialogue and have the readiness to meet each other halfway. Where does one’s identity begin and end, or can two become one?

Lotta Wennäkoski in charge of the programme for Summer Sounds 2017

Composer Lotta Wennäkoski will be planning the program for 32nd Avanti Summer Sounds festival, to be organised on 28 June – 2 July 2017. This year’s Summer Sounds Festival, which consisted of fourteen concerts and other events in Porvoo and Pernaja, was attended by an audience of roughly 3 000 people.

Lotta Wennäkoski was the artistic co-ordinator of The Tampere Biennale Festival in 2008–2010 and the composer-in-residence of Tapiola Sinfonietta during the season 2010–2011. Her compositions have been performed widely in Finnish and international concert halls and festivals, including The Helsinki Festival, Musica Nova, Märzmusik Berlin, Warsaw Autumn, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and The Other Minds Festival. She has also composed a number of commissioned works for the likes of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

“I was very flattered and surprised by the invitation to become the artistic co-ordinator of the Summer Sounds. It will be a very exciting opportunity to plan the programme for a festival that delivers chamber and orchestral, classical and contemporary music. What a range of possibilities that opens up!” says Wennäkoski.

Closed on 3 July, this year’s Summer Sounds was curated by Moscow-born Finnish conductor Dima Slobodeniouk. The five-day festival saw fourteen concerts and other events, six of which free, take place around Porvoo and Pernaja. In all, the festival was attended by roughly 3 000 visitors. Like in previous years, a bus service operated between Helsinki and the Art Factory, taking visitors to the festival and back during the festival.

The principal supporters of the Summer Sounds are the City of Porvoo, Aktiasäätiö, Neste, Porvoo Art Factory and the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.

In a public house, one may find oneself in the company of rowdy sailors and coquettish harlots. If you wish to avoid trouble, it is best to stay out of the way of drunken soldiers and hot-headed brawlers. Of course, one must be watchful of pickpockets, beggars and tricksters, too.
Respected musicians held different sorts of soirées in urban taverns. Playing host to a new sort of entertainment – the public concert – such as The Mitre Inn in London and Zimmermann’s Coffee House in Leipzig were zones free from the influence of the clergy and the court.
This was life in the 17th century, the golden age of the viol.
In October, we will take our viols to the familiar scene of their ancestors: the pub. Where we go from there – let that be determined by the clientele and the atmosphere!

Sibelius-Akatemian sävellysopiskelijoiden teoksia Kamariorkesteri Avantille

Klang 2016 -konsertissa Avanti tarjoaa alustan Sibelius-Akatemian sävellyksen opiskelijoille. Konsertissa on kolme teosparia, kullakin kaksi säveltäjää. Säveltäjien tehtävänä on saada kappaleensa sopimaan yhteen ja miettimään teoksensa paikkaa konserttikokonaisuudessa. Käytettävänä on suuren ensemblen soitinkokoonpano ja siitä aukeavat mahdollisuudet soolosta koko klangiin. Säveltäjien on pystyttävä jakamaan ideoitaan ja kohtaamaan toisensa, ainakin kappaleiden saumakohdissa. Mihin oma identiteetti loppuu ja mistä toisen alkaa?
