About the concert
The Avant Garde Summer Play celebrates its 40th anniversary. The opening concert on Wednesday 25 June will start with Kaija Saariaho’s Forty Heartbeats, first performed at the 1998 Suvisoito. The work is dedicated to Esa-Pekka Salonen and Magnus Lindberg in honour of their 40th birthdays. The solo number is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, played by Dutch pianist Liza Ferschtman. After the intermission, the programme includes Polar Pearls by Outi Tarkiainen (2023) and Chamber Symphony by Sebastian Fagerlund (2021). The opening concert at the Arts Centre will be conducted by conductor John Storgårds.
The theme of the 2025 Summer Festival is Light in the Light. Fagerlund explains the theme:
“The theme of Summer Music 2025 is” Light in the Light “. The title refers to the abstract idea of musical expression, communication and emotion as light that travels through the centuries, returning in different forms as it renews, changes and branches. In addition to my own music, I have selected composers and works for the festival that create fruitful dialogues and meanings between them, where the intellectual and the emotional, joy and sorrow, the inner and outer worlds meet and intermingle in different ways.”
Avantis Suvisoitto celebrates 40 years. The opening concert onsdagen den 25 juni inleds med Kaija Saariahos Forty Heartbeats, som uruppfördes på Suvisoitto år 1998. Verket är tillägnat Esa-Pekka Salonen och Magnus Lindberg för att hedra deras 40-årsdagar. As a solo number, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is performed, with the Dutch Liza Ferschtman as soloist. After the interval, Outi Tarkiaine’s Polar Pearls (2023) and Sebastian Fagerlund’s Chamber Symphony (2021) will be played. The opening concert in Konstfabriken will be conducted by conductor John Storgårds.
The theme for the Summer Play 2025 is Ljus i ljuset. Fagerlund sings about the theme:
“The theme for Summer Play 2025 is ‘Ljus i ljuset’. The title is based on an abstract idea about musical expression, communication and phenomena as a ljus that has been developed over the centuries and returns in different forms as it grows, changes and limits itself. In addition to my own music, I have contributed composers and works to the festival that create fruitful dialogues and meanings in the present, where the intellectual and the emotional, glee and sorrow, the inner and the outer worlds are met and fused in different ways.”
