Porvoo Jazz Festival x Avanti!: Friction!

This year, the Porvoo Jazz Festival will join forces with the Avanti! chamber orchestra and Suvisoito for the second time. In June, Suvisoito hosted a concert with the Porvoo Jazz Club on Saturday night of the festival, with Mika Kallio Gong Odyssey. Now Avanti! will return to the Porvoo Jazz Festival with a programme of scored contemporary music that at times comes very close to the aesthetics of free improvised jazz.

In Saturday’s concert, saxophonist Jaime Estevéz will be able to “jungle-climb” with his instrument in different sound and emotional worlds. In addition to two impressive solo numbers, Edison Denisov’s Saxophone Sonata will be played as a classic work, and the recent duo piece Impetus by the Slovenian Nina Šenk. Agata Zubel’s brass trio Friction concludes the concert, communicating in a humorous way with Michael Maierhof’s Shopping 4. The instrumentation of Maierhof’s piece: three balloons!

Programme:

Thierry Alla: Digital
Edison Denisov: Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano
Michael Maierhof: Shopping 4
Christian Lauba: Jungle
