Raga and strumming

About the concert

Raga and strumming. Song selections and sound clouds. Arto Koski and Raphaël Languillat.  Curated by Avant’s artistic director Joonas Ahonen, the club evening combines Indian ragas, throat-song resonances and the extreme limits of the grand piano. Welcome to a club night where anything is possible!

Arto Koskinen (1947-): Fuga Indiana Fantasia in Saranga (1993/2000)

Christian Mason (1984-): Sardinian Songbook ekS

2. Ballate a Ballu Tundu – for Mandhira de Saram

Raphaël Languillat (1989-): flagellationii (torso) (2015/2025) ekS

Kyle Gann’s Earth-Preserving Chant (2010) is based on the idea of careful use of resources and is therefore composed with as little material as possible. The commissioner’s wish was to use a theme borrowed from indigenous North American music. Gann did not do this, but he does use the rhythmic structures he developed from his love of Hopi and Pueblo music.

Arto Koskinen’ s Fuga Indiana (1993/2000) combines North Indian modes with Western polyphony. Joonas Ahonen’s recording of the work for the Alpha label was named one of Helsingin Sanomat’s best albums of 2024. At the Avanti Club, the work will be performed at Fantasia in Sâranga.

Christian Mason, himself a throat-singing enthusiast and winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Prize 2025, has arranged two volumes of Pigeon and Sardinian throat-singing folk music for string quartet. For this concert, a few examples from the Sardinian tradition were selected.
The throat song is based on the use of the upper range, and Raphaël Languillat takes that same phenomenon as his starting point in the club’s closing strumming-inspired work Flagellatio ii (torso) – a triptych during which Avant’s Steinway grand piano is used to maximum effect as an echo chamber that accumulates resonances.
