The Reformation beginning in the 16th century sought to purge the Christian faith of the corruption and battle for power entrenched in it. Over the following century, religion was really only a pretext for the hostility that had been building up for years. During the Thirty Years’ War of 1618–1648, the Protestants attacked the Holy German-Roman Empire. Protestant Sweden later joined in the war, with consequences that wiped out much of the population, economy and culture of a large part of Central Europe. War was also waged on a front extending from church music to broadsheet, and the Swedes took the Renaissance and Baroque back to Uppsala as booty. All the Thirty-Years’-War composers in this concert are victors.
