John Luther Adams: Become River
Go with the flow! Become River – the last part of the Become trilogy by John Luther Adams – encourages the listener to dive into a musical river, to be as one with the movement of nature and the natural cycle that carries us to the right place in the natural order. In Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, the young couple likewise seek their right place in life and find confirmation of their faith in the future in the Shakers hymn Simple Gifts. David Lang’s heavyweight begins where Sibelius’s fifth symphony ends. When the last chord, separated by rests, has sounded, Lang begins to take it up in the space to the future freed by the symphony. When the WTC was attacked in 2001, Julia Wolfe and her family were only a few blocks away. Big, Beautiful, Dark and Scary from 2002 captures how life felt then, a beautiful time in life shattered by a terrifying tragedy.
The concert lasts approx. 1 h 45 min. Intermission.
