Erik Satie was an eccentric composer who delighted in shocking orderly bourgeois cultural circles with his music and behaviour. Kurt Schwertsik’s tango-influenced Adieu Satie is a tribute to him while at the same time reflecting the kinship he felt with the French composer. The new composition commissioned from pedagogue, pianist and composer Mioko Yokoyama will be premiered at the Friday concert.
HK Gruber, Artistic Director of the 2021 Summer Sounds, is a living monument to German alternative art. In music in line with the caustic drama of Central European cabaret, Brecht and Weill, he is both popular and challenging, entertaining and cranky. He reflects this history in his violin concerto Nebelsteinmusik. Busking (2007) is a trumpet concerto inspired by street music, its street cred enhanced by an accordion and a banjo. John Storgårds and Håkan Hardenberger swap roles mid-flight.
Concert duration approx. 2 hours including intermission.
