Julia Wolfe: Steel Hammer 

Steel Hammer for three female singers, clarinet, cello, double bass, electric guitar, piano and percussion is one of the best-known works by Julia Wolfe and a monolithic deconstruction/meditation on the American John Henry ballad. John Henry, wielding a steel hammer, tests his strength against the modern steam drill. Wolfe’s piece draws from the many variations of the ballad, while embracing folk music traditions incorporating banjo, whistling, clogging, and more. Legend has it that the John Henry wins the contest against the machine, but dies as a result. Trio Mediæval joins the ensemble to sing the tale of this quintessential American black folk hero
