In accordance with its time-honoured tradition, Summer Sounds jumps the gun in Pernaja Church with a pre-festival concert featuring this year’s Artistic Director Julia Wolfe and her string quartet Early that summer. The quartet heralds a musical development inspired by the books she has read about US political history; for so often have they begun their chronicles of significant chains of events with the innocent-sounding words “early that summer”. Just, by Wolfe’s Bang on a Can composer friend David Lang, is something quite different –love music based on the biblical Song of Songs, with the Norwegian Trio Mediæval of women’s voices as the soloist. Paving the way for the new works are some jaunty harpsichord pieces by Ligeti and throbbing polyphonic Baroque concertos by Bach.
